FAQs
Fishing therapy is an accepted psychosocial therapy for pediatric oncology patients. Our fishing trips arefun and educational for kids battling cancer or adjusting to life after treatment. We try our hardest toteach kids how to fish and catch fish. We cannot always guarantee lots of fish, but we do guarantee lots of fun and enjoyment.
The following FAQs provide a good orientation for you and the family prior to your trip.
Do we need to have fishing experience?
No – we teach and fish on each charter.
Do we need to bring fishing gear?
No – all gear and bait are supplied.
Is there a charge for the charter?
No – all trips are free of charge!
How long are the trips?
Most trips are four to five hours depending on the child!
Are these day trips?
Yes – most trips are Monday through Friday. We encourage weekday trips due to recreational weekend boat traffic on the water. We have never had a parent not take their kid out of school for fishing therapy.
Do you have evening trips?
Yes – summer hours allow for late afternoon/evening trips.
How many people can fish?
All trips are three person trips.
Can my child go more than once?
Yes – many kids enjoy fishing more than once.
Where do we fish?
We fish Lakes Erie and Ontario, the Upper and Lower Niagara River, and
various Finger Lakes.
What time of year do we fish?
Most trips are from May to September, but we will fish fall and winter depending on weather.
Are the trips educational?
Yes – we teach fishing techniques, fish identification and local ecology.
What type of fish will we catch?
A lot depends on the time of year and where we fish, but we regularly catch smallmouth bass, walleye, and various types of trout and salmon.
Are your Captains insured?
Yes – all Captains are fully licensed and insured. We require Liability Waivers to be signed before each trip.
How old are the kids who fish?
The age range is usually between 4 and 21 with the average age being 8, and we have both male and female participants each year.
Do we need a license?
Those 16 years and older need a NYS fishing license. They are available on-line with the NYDEC for a one day or seasonal license.
Do we need lifejackets?
We provide all life jackets and those under 12 years old are required to wear life jackets.
What about food and accessories?
Please bring whatever snacks and beverages you prefer. Water is available on the boat.
How do we dress?
Dress to the weather of the day. Hats, light jackets, and sneakers are encouraged. Bring sunglasses and suntan lotion. We have medical kits on board. Its usually a little cooler on the water than on land.
Can we keep fish?
Yes, depending on the species. We like to practice catch and release fishing.
What about photos?
Pictures are encouraged!
Any Covid concerns?
All boats are sanitized. We had only one cancellation due to Covid 19 in three years.
How do I book a trip?
Call Captain Ned for a fishing date. Once booked, the Captain will call afew days in advance to discuss time and place to meet and fish.
